Writings/Audio

György Kovásznai’s paintings could have already been seen at some exhibitions, and luckilly his films are projected more and more at different festivals, but his writings are not known as they mostly got no publicity. These texts are the key to understanding his visual works better.
Early, at the age of 24, Kovásznai was fired from the College of Fine Arts for his subversive pictures. He decided to be a writer (also). He wrote short stories, plays, comedies and also philosophical and art theory, not truely fictional texts.
His interdisciplinar artistic activity was not welcome at his time. Thanks to this, his personality and work were surrounded by myths for a small company of people. “Maybe his versatility is the reason to not having ever been accepted by any guild, clique, association in his life. He was not member of Art Fund nor Writers” Association. He had no solo exhibitions in his life and his writings were not published, his dramas did not reach the stage. (Wrote Kálmán Kecskeméti Kálmán in his article, 1992, titled Discovering Kovásznai…)

Kovásznai’s writing titled Self interview tells much about his approach to art, his goals and struggles. Parts of it reminisce about his school years from a distance of 20 – 30 years, his first steps and older artists who took an important role in his orientation as a youth are especially interesting. We can read mediations not free from doubts about interpreting and opposing socialist and modernist avantgarde ideas.
